Valldemossa or Sóller: choosing a base for a walking trip

Two of the best village bases in the Tramuntana — one a jewel box, one a working town — and which suits which kind of week.

Sooner or later, planning a walking week here, you have to answer one question: where do we sleep? Move hotel every night and half the holiday goes on packing and parking. Pick one village and walk out from it each morning, and the week finds a rhythm — the same café, the same evening light, a bit of you starting to belong there by Thursday. Two villages come up again and again for that: Valldemossa and Sóller. Both put good trails a few minutes from the door. They are also nothing alike, and which one you choose quietly sets the tone of the whole trip.

Valldemossa — the jewel box

Higher into the range at around 430 metres, small, and almost unreasonably pretty: cobbled lanes, green shutters, geraniums in pots, and the great Carthusian charterhouse where Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838–39. They were, for the record, fairly wretched — it rained without stopping, he was ill, the villagers kept their distance from the unmarried couple — and she turned the whole episode into a splendidly waspish little book. The village bakes coca de patata, a soft, sugar-dusted potato bun; have one warm.

The catch is the coaches. Day-trippers pour in from around eleven and the main street runs shoulder to shoulder until mid-afternoon. Then it drains, and a Valldemossa evening — swifts screaming round the bell tower, the light going amber along the terraces — is something close to magical.

From the door you can walk the Archduke’s Bridleway circuit and join the GR221 north toward Deià or south toward Esporles and Banyalbufar. There are fewer beds and tables than you would expect of somewhere this famous, so book early — and know the bus links are thinner than Sóller’s.

We can collect your party directly from your hotel or village rental and handle all trailhead logistics.

Sóller — the working town

Sóller sits in a broad bowl of citrus groves, ringed by the highest mountains on the island. It has a vintage wooden tram clanking down to the port, a 1912 electric train that bores through the mountain to Palma, a proper covered market, and the settled, unhurried air of a place that runs for its own people first and visitors second.

For walking it is the best base on Mallorca, no qualification needed. From here you reach the Can Prohem circuit, the villages loop through Biniaraix and Fornalutx, the stone staircase of the Barranc de Biniaraix up to the high country, the Deià and Tossals Verds stages of the GR221, and the lighthouse walk along the coast from the port. More restaurants, more beds, easier logistics — and a lived-in feel rather than a film set.

A detail walkers enjoy: the orange groves are still watered by a centuries-old sharing system, spring water sent down the terraces by the hour under rules a local syndicate keeps to this day. You pass the little síquies and sluice gates all day long.

So which one?

For a shorter, scenic, atmosphere-first stay built around a couple of walks: Valldemossa. For a week of varied walking with easy transport and somewhere lively to come back to each night: Sóller. And if you can manage it, do both — two or three nights in each. They are barely a GR221 stage apart, and the walk between them, down from Valldemossa through Deià and on into Sóller, is one of the loveliest days on the entire route. When changing hotels on foot, Mallorca Luggage Transfers transports your suitcases directly from reception to reception while you enjoy the trail.
