The walk

The Camí des Correu — the path the postman once walked — climbs steadily out of Esporles and over into Banyalbufar, a village built entirely on stone terraces that step down towards the water. It is easy, shaded walking on a well-made old trail, about 220 m of climbing spread over the way.

In Banyalbufar you walk through the centre, and just past the church you reach one of the village bodegas. The tasting is out at a rustic spot just outside it, sea view and all: local Malvasia wines and delicacies laid on for the group, while the host talks you through the growers, the vines and the wine.

Guide’s tipEasy, shaded walking — good for a hot day. Save your appetite: the Malvasia and local bites at the bodega, sea below, are the whole point.

A bit of history
Banyalbufar's terraces — the marjades — were cut by Moorish farmers a thousand years ago and irrigated from hillside springs. Malvasia wine once made the village rich enough to build them ever higher; phylloxera nearly wiped the grape out in the 1890s, and the small-scale recovery you taste today is recent.

Common questions

How do we get to the start?

The walk starts at Esporles, in the North West of the Serra de Tramuntana. There is parking near the start if you drive; otherwise we can arrange a private transfer or point you to the nearest bus. We send exact directions and the meeting time once you have booked.

Is this walk right for us?

It is graded Easy. You will want to be comfortable with 220 m of climbing and around 2.5 hours on your feet over uneven ground, but no special experience is needed. If you are not sure, tell us how you usually walk and we will be honest about whether it fits.

Can we bring children?

Yes, on a private walk — just tell us their ages in advance so we set the right pace. Parents look after their own children throughout, including carrying younger ones.

When is the best time of year to do it?

Comfortable in every season. There is enough shade, and it sits low enough to work well in high summer and on a clear winter day too.

Is there a minimum group size for the bodega tasting?

It depends which tasting you pick: the “Malvasia tasting at a family bodega + local bites” needs 5 or more. The calculator on this page flags it if your group is smaller.
