Walking and Wine Excursion - Puigpunyent (1)

This fabulous itinerary combines a variation of one of our favourite walks Step back in time and a visit to one of our favourite Mallorcan vineyards - so it's a real winner! We are treated to an insight into the workings of some of the stunning manor houses and rural estates that we see along the way and finally we get a close-up and very personal experience of the ancient finca that houses the vineyard that we visit.

Our walk starts on a wide track that climbs gently giving us fabulous views of the surrounding countryside and some impressive Mallorcan Fincas and their estate land. We then take an old cobbled mule path that leads us into dense holm oak forest of dappled light and shade with occasional look-out points across the valley. We descend over ancient olive terracing belonging to the beautiful manor house estate of Son Fortesa and enjoy stunning views of the Finca on our way. We then follow a quiet country lane, which leads us directly to our destination - the stunning Bodega of Son Puig.

This delightful, well established family-run bodega is a magnificent manor house set in about 7 hectares of vines. The family is very hospitable and they take immense pleasure in showing us around the vineyard and finca (including the tiny family chapel), and telling us about their vines and how their wines are produced.

Finally we sit and relax under the shade of a wonderful vine-covered terrace, where our very own wine educator Martin Ward leads us through a tasting of the Son Puig wines. He will literally educate us about wine growing in Mallorca and about the wines we're tasting, while we enjoy the different wines from this lovely vineyard and re-charge our energy levels with a delicious tapas lunch.

A perfect way to finish a perfect day!

A visit to Son Puig is even more special when the cherry blossom is out in the Spring or when the fruit ripens later in the summer, as this estate also has a substantial number of cherry trees too, which yield a fantastic crop of cherries.

Please note that our Walking and Wine Itineraries are only available as a tailor-made day out. So why not get your friends and family together and make it a party, or to celebrate a special event...!

What to bring with you when walking in Mallorca:

Island weather can change very quickly and unexpectedly, so it is always advisable to be ready for anything. In the mountains, cloud can drop quickly and mist can come in from the sea, causing loss in visibility and fall in temperatures.

The terrain in Mallorca is rough so good footwear is essential. Most of our walks require walking boots with hard soles, good grip and ankle support. It is a good idea to wear your boots in well (if they are new!) before putting them to the test on some of our uncompromising, rocky surfaces.

September to early June are the main walking months on the island, and although not as hot as the summer, Sept/Oct and April/May can still be hot, and even in mid-winter sensitive skins can burn. Consequently, anything that you like to use to protect yourself from the sun – hat, cream, glasses, lip salve, long sleeves and long trousers….. is advisable.

Whatever the month it is essential to carry plenty of water, and a few snacks to top up your energy levels, are always advisable – just in case!

We recommend that you bring with you:

  • Good sturdy footwear – hard soles and good grip are the most essential
  • 25-30 litres day-pack
  • Water bottle - containing at least 1.5 litres
  • High energy snacks
  • Sun protection – hat, sun cream, sun glasses…
  • Light waterproofs
  • Additional layers for warmth - fleece, pullover...
  • Walking pole(s)
  • Small personal medical kit – antiseptic wipes and cream, plasters, bandage, antihistamine for allergic reactions…

Other equipment you may find useful:

  • Bathing suit
  • Torch
  • Penknife (Pocket knife)
  • Whistle to attract attention
  • Pad or cushion to sit on during rest breaks
  • Compass
  • Binoculars
  • Camera
  • Loo (toilet) paper!
  • Ear plugs if staying in a refuge!
  • Soft, comfortable shoes and a change of clothes for the evening, if staying overnight
