Challenging

This is one of the most rewarding stages of the GR221 - it is a remote and exposed stretch with spectacular scenery and views. You can start the walk either from the Cubér reservoir or from Tossals Verds refuge (the latter if you're completing the full route). One of the many highlights of this fabulous walk is a series of ancient snow-pits that we pass along the way, showing us yet more of the island's rural history.

It's about an hour's easy walk to the Font des Prat, whether we start at Tossals or the Cubér reservoir. From these springs, we set off for Lluc through the holm oak woods that are still so prevalent on the island. After a long and windy climb we come out into the open above the trees and continue towards Coll des Prat along a narrow stony path flanked by the heights of Massanella and the Serra des Teixos on either side. Along the way we've passed the remains of charcoal burners settlements and another delightful spring.

At the Coll des Prat we get fabulous views both from where we've come back towards Puig Major (the island's highest but inaccessible peak) and down the Comafreda valley and across the plains towards Alcudia. Here, we also find one of a series of old snow-pits in the area where the ice-makers produced and stored their wares before taking it down the mountain by donkey to the villages below. We now wind our way down into the valley and then start to climb again, quite steeply up the Puig d'en Galileu. From here we start a very long and very windy descent on restored stone path, the Cami de ses Voltes, and soon we Lluc Monastery comes into view, nestled in the valley below.

And if we arrive at the Monastery before 5pm we may be treated to the famous choir school's daily practice session....
