Moderate

This walk gives us a wonderful overview of Sóller and the Sóller valley, as well as some of the pretty mountain villages surrounding this picturesque and very atmospheric old town. We get fantastic views of the whole valley and an excellent insight into its heritage as the major citrus-growing region of the island. This is a magical walk with lots of variety - we start in town and walk along country lanes and through olive groves to visit 2 of the prettiest villages on the island and a very rural hamlet on our way...

We set off through the centre of Sóller town, through the main square, down C/ de la Luna and past the Can Prunera art gallery before leaving these ancient narrow streets behind and entering the far more rural world of citrus orchards. Soon we come to the lovely little village of Biniaraix, at the bottom of the famous Barranc (gorge) of Biniaraix, with its cobbled streets and tiny village plaza. From here we start our climb out of the valley along an asphalt country lane, but the views get better and better as we ascend and wind our way up to the coll.

Once we've enjoyed the views at our highest point, we wend our way down to the village of Fornalutx through olive terraces via an old stony path. When we get to the village there are plenty of opportunities for a break and refreshments, as there are several bars and restaurants here.

From here the path back down to Sóller is a delightful meandering route that takes us past the tiny and very charming Fornalutx cemetery, through ancient woods, through the tiny rural hamlet of Binibassi, and finally down country lanes and narrow paths before we find ourselves back in the centre of Soller again.

This is not a difficult walk although there is a fairly steep climb out of the valley - but the views we get from the highest point make the climb more than worthwhile! For most of the route we walk on well-paved paths or asphalt, but there are also some sections, which involve narrow paths and loose stones.
