Easy

A fantastic day out exploring a small corner of "old" rural Mallorca. The trip includes a guided tour around the charming little finca museum of La Granja followed by a delightful walk (see Ref. W-NW09). This walk takes us through ancient holm oak woods, with fabulous views of the coast and beautifully kept terracing, and a fascinating insight into ancient Moorish agricultural techniques. We stroll around the cliff-side village of Banyalbufar before a mouth-watering lunch served by one of our favourite little restaurants.

We start the day at La Granja where we'll be taken around the museum by our guide, who will give us valuable insights into the rural life of old Mallorca. This is a delightful place with beautiful gardens and we'll absorb the atmosphere and history here for approximately 1 and a half hours before starting our walk to Banyalbufar.

We'll start our walk from the car park at La Granja and follow a lovely path uphill through the woods. When we reach the top there are some excellent look-out points from which to enjoy sweeping views of the coastline towards Valldemossa and Sóller. This route has the additional benefit of giving us a really good vantage point from which to see some of the best preserved and maintained terraces on the island, as well as the incredible irrigation systems and dry stone walling that the Moors introduced around 1,000 years ago!

This part of the island is interesting as well as spectacularly beautiful. Its Moorish heritage is plain to see - in fact the name Banyalbufar means "vineyard by the sea" in Arabic - but what few people know is that this tiny place was famous for its Malmsey wine, which was in huge demand at the European courts around the turn of the last milennium - no grand occasion was quite complete without it.

So we'll hear about Moors, about the kings of Aragón, about wine making and irrigation and dry stone walling... and we'll see some breathtaking scenery.

When we've rested, eaten enough and enjoyed some local wine, we'll head back in the direction of Palma.
