Challenging

This itinerary offers a fantastic week's walking combined with 2 highlights, which will give you a good insight into the "real" Mallorca! Each year in May, the island celebrates "Es Firo" - its victory over Moorish invaders on 11 May 1561. This is an important day on the Mallorcan calendar and celebrations include dramatic mock battles and rowdy street revelry. Our other highlight is a much more tranquil experience, as we make our own pilgrimage to the monastic sanctuary of Lluc to see the "Moreneta" (dark Madonna), who is said to fulfill all your wishes...

Fornalutx

Fornalutx is your base for this holiday. It is just outside Sóller and it's one of the prettiest villages on the island. It has a small central square, and narrow cobbled streets, full of character and charm - it has even won awards for Mallorca's "best kept" village. It is within easy walking distance of central Sóller, and also has a few cafes and restaurants of its own, a bank, post office and other essentials.

The village is surrounded by majestic mountain peaks and is a truly spectacular location for a walking holiday.

Walking Itinerary

Graded: Red Boot

Your walking itinerary includes 5 days’ guided walking.

Over the first few days of your holiday we'll stay in the Sóller area so that we can participate in, and enjoy the many events and celebrations scheduled for this dramatic fiesta weekend! We'll make sure our walk for the day starts or ends in Sóller and that we're in the right place at the right time... but please note these revelries are not for the faint-hearted, be prepared for anything - loud gunshots, having your hat unceremoniously removed, your face painted black....

Our exact walking itinerary will depend on the Fiesta schedule, but be sure that the walks in this area are varied and spectacular.

We'll have a day off after the last night of the Fiesta - we'll probably need it - to make sure that we're rested and ready for the next stage of your holiday - the pilgrimage to Lluc Monastery. This is a long, approximately 8-hour hike along the ancient path taken by pilgrims from Sóller to the Monastery. Anyone who doesn't feel up to quite such a long walk, can join us at a later stage and take a transfer to the Cuber reservoir. From here we'll all walk together along the pilgrim's path to the monastery.

We'll arrive by 5 pm to listen to the Choir School's practice session, and then enjoy a refectory-style dinner of delicious traditional Mallorcan dishes before retiring to our beds for a very tranquil night. What a contrast to the previous few nights...!

In the morning those who would like to, can attend Mass before we set off for our walk for the day in the beautiful hills and valley surrounding the Monastery. Other are welcome to enjoy the gardens and surrounding walks. We'll take an afternoon transfer back to Fornalutx for your last night's dinner at the hotel.

Hotel

We have chosen a delightful, 8-bedroom hotel in the centre of Fornalutx as your base for the week (see Ref. A-NW04 for details). This is a perfect base for your walking holiday and you will be very well looked after by your hosts - their breakfasts are legendary and so are their evening meals (3 of which are included in the price of your holiday). The hotel has a small swimming pool so if the weather (and the water!) has warmed up sufficiently this is perfect for a dip at the end of your day's walking.

This is a warm, friendly, cosy and exceptionally hospitable place to stay.

This itinerary includes 1 night at the Lluc Monastery, where the rooms ("cells") are simple, quite basic and clean. The setting is fabulous and the Monastery itself is interesting and has lovely cloisters and gardens. As soon as the tourists disappear for the day, this place transforms into a magical and tranquil spot...
