GR221 Stage 5 Tossals Verds to Lluc

This is one of the most rewarding stages of the GR221 - it is a remote and exposed stretch with spectacular scenery and views. You can start the walk either from the Cubér reservoir or from Tossals Verds refuge (the latter if you're completing the full route). One of the many highlights of this fabulous walk is a series of ancient snow-pits that we pass along the way, showing us yet more of the island's rural history.

GR221 Stage 2A Esporles to Valldemossa

This is a challenging yet rewarding walk with 2 steep ascents (1 very steep!) and 2 steep descents before we arrive at our destination in Valldemossa. Much of this route, which forms part of the GR221, is in holm oak woods with lots of evidence of the various rural mountain industries that dominated these mountains in days gone by. We also get plenty of spectacular sea views from a series of natural look-out points along the way. This is not one of the most popular stages of the GR221 and in our view it is rather under-rated.

4 Picturesque rural villages

This is a delightful, very easy circular walk around 4 charming Mallorcan villages. It is another excellent route in January and February as much of it passes through rural land and almond orchards. Unusually, most of this walk is along tarmac country lanes and tracks, but the lanes are quiet and we may see just a handful of cars along the way. Also unusually, it is almost entirely flat with hardly a hill to climb the whole way! A very relaxing and tranquil walk, with pretty churches and villages to enjoy along the way.

GR221 Stage 1: Es Capdella to Estellencs

This lovely walk from the pretty inland village of Es Capdella to Estellencs on the northwestern coast is now officially Stage 1 of Mallorca's long distance hike, the GR221 or Dry Stone Route. And what a great start it is! It is a combination of gentle, tranquil walking through typical Mallorcan vegetation, a steep satisfying climb and then an easy, mossy, wooded descent with lovely coastal views into Estellencs - a charming, rather remote settlement.

GR221 Stage 3A: Valldemossa to Deia

On a clear day, this is one of the most stunning walks on the island. It is challenging, with a steep climb out of Valldemossa and a long steep descent into Deia (with 1 or 2 brief nervous moments for those who suffer from vertigo), but it's well worth the effort for the views along the north western coast. There are also lots of examples of the old forest dwellers' settlements, so we get the opportunity to learn about Mallorca's rural history. Overall a real treat and one of our favourite stages of the GR221 or Dry Stone Route.
